New London-based trio Decent News is made up of musicians Caleb Moore, Eddie LaFlash, and Laken Stokes. Together, they make aggressive industrial metal music with elements of hardcore and noise. Recently, the band has dropped their new album Monolith.
Monolith is a big step up in craft and aesthetics for Decent News. While earlier album Filth found the band in promising industrial territory, this new album finds the band firing on all creative cylinders. As exhibited by early single “Black Box”, decent news amps up relentlessly heavy riffage, digitized percussion, gritty warehouse club rhythms, and rugged vocals. The biggest development is how the band nails the vocal performance, with the distorted blend of both singers sounding absolutely monstrous.
But considering the high energy output of industrial metal, Decent News also show a more refined sense of arrangements and craft. In contrast to its monolithic title, the band has a good sense of rotating its machinery. For every metallic guitar riff, there is a melodic piano or synthesizer arrangement. For every guttural growl, there is a humanistic spoken word. For every relentless “Black Box”, there is a modulated “Torture Me”. All of these variations increase Monolith‘s replayability and reveal new subtleties with each listen.
