Bebé Machete is the musical project of Mobey Irizarry, a genderqueer Puerto Rican artist from Hartford, CT. Their music blends Salsa, Hip Hop, Lo-Fi and experimental rock, dealing with issues of queerness, resistance, and liberation. They seek to put ancestral rhythms and modes of resistance into a contemporary experimental pop context.
Irizzary writes on the album:
“There Is Not a Metaphor That Can Contain is a utopian dream, a resilient speculation, a body of ardent, rageful hope. This project does not romanticize the constant, unending resilience people of color, colonized people, and queer and trans people are perpetually forced to employ, but rather recognizes the violences of colonialism, white supremacy, capitalism, and patriarchy, and grounds itself in ancestral histories and practices of resistance in order to dream of liberation.
Metaphor honors those who have been murdered by the racist violence of policing and incarceration, of austerity and state-sponsored neglect, and of artificial catastrophe. Metaphor dreams of liberation for all colonized and oppressed peoples through joy, poetry, rage, and dance. Come dream with it.”
