New Haven based Skating is the bedroom pop project of musician Jake Shaker. Last Friday, Shaker shared his new album Dream Speed. The album can be purchased for five dollars at Skating’s Bandcamp here.
Dream Speed picks up where Skating’s promising first record left off, building on Shaker’s guitar based emotive indie songwriting with digital and synth arrangements. Opener and title track “Dream Speed” is appropriately titled, pleasantly gliding at a lullaby’s pace, sleepwalking “into the blue / out past the moon / up through the trees / to where we can meet in dream speed.”
One of the biggest surprises of the album is how downright danceable many of the tracks are, with new standouts “Ditma” and “Blackout” carrying a continuous groove as Shaker lulls and croons sentimentally.
Shaker, who recorded the album himself, has had the time to develop extra nuance throughout the album. There is a gentle surreality to the songs as they expands with subtle synths, percussion, and vocal harmonies. Despite the opening track’s tribute to otherworldy escapism, Skating sounds more confident and better than ever.
