Earlier this month, Central CT ghostly grunge outfit Crag Mask announced their debut album “Loom”, due out on Super Wimpy Punch and Gawk Records on May 25th, and have shared two songs off it via GoldFlakePaint and Allston Pudding. You can preorder CDs here and cassettes here.
Crag Mask started as the project of Zachary Abramo (formerly of Vundabar), which quickly expanded into a four-piece and developed an EP’s worth of music into a full length.
Both songs “Semi Slum” and “Blue Snoot” are both promising introductions to the group’s particular sound. While the band exhibits a strong appeal for dissonant garage riffage and punchy distortion, Abramo and co. offer a surprising amount of melody that cuts throughout its ghostly darkness. That being said, the band balances these quick fits of pop sensibility with unusual song structures and jagged rhythmic shifts.
